HLTAID014 – Provide Advanced First Aid

Challenging situations such as multiple casualty incidents, casualty movement, extrication and potentially fatal illnesses or injuries require advanced preparation and response skills.

This course provides practical simulated real-life situations to develop the confidence and ability to coordinate and manage emergency responses while providing advanced first aid.

Training is delivered in line with legal, community and workplace considerations, Australian Resuscitation Council guidelines and national clinical standards.

Participants will learn advanced first aid techniques including management of hypothermia, hyperthermia, head, neck and spinal injuries, life-threatening bleeding using tourniquets and haemostatic dressings, and casualty management during shock.

The course also covers casualty documentation, workplace incident reporting, debriefing, identifying improvements and recognising psychological impacts following emergencies.

This course is delivered as a blended program combining online learning with face-to-face practical training.

This course develops advanced first aid knowledge and practical skills to manage complex emergency situations and coordinate effective responses.

• CPR techniques – performing life-saving cardiopulmonary resuscitation
• Defibrillator (AED) use – safely operating an automated external defibrillator
• Managing injuries including bleeding, fractures, burns, electric shock, eye injuries and soft tissue injuries
• Managing bites and stings including snake bites, spider bites and other envenomation
• Recognising and responding to poisoning emergencies
• Managing temperature-related illnesses including heat stroke, heat exhaustion and hypothermia
• Everyday first aid including minor wound care and infection prevention
• Conducting casualty assessments including vital signs and secondary surveys
• Coordinating team responses and triaging multiple casualties
• Managing incidents including verbal and written reporting requirements
• Reviewing contingency plans to improve future emergency responses

Your skills and knowledge will be assessed through practical hands-on tasks, simulated emergency scenarios and a short written test.

Assessment activities include realistic emergency response situations designed to build confidence and ensure participants can apply advanced first aid skills effectively.

This course includes practical simulated emergency scenarios designed to develop confidence in managing complex first aid situations.

• Perform CPR on an infant and adult casualty
• Safely use an automated external defibrillator (AED)
• Control life-threatening bleeding and apply advanced bleeding management techniques
• Treat fractures, burns, electric shock, eye injuries and soft tissue injuries
• Provide first aid for snake bites, spider bites and other envenomation injuries
• Recognise and respond to poisoning emergencies
• Manage heat-related illnesses including heat stroke and heat exhaustion
• Manage cold-related illnesses including hypothermia
• Complete casualty assessments including vital signs and secondary surveys
• Coordinate team responses during multiple casualty incidents

Participants will develop the skills required to provide first aid for a range of emergency situations including:

• Severe allergic reactions (anaphylaxis)
• Asthma attacks
• Choking emergencies
• Bleeding and shock including wound management
• Nosebleeds
• Fractures, dislocations, sprains and strains
• Bites and stings including snakes and funnel-web spiders
• Burns and soft tissue injuries
• Head, neck and spinal injuries
• Electric shock incidents
• Temperature-related illnesses

Participants will learn how to manage emergency incidents beyond immediate treatment, including:

• Managing a life-threatening bleed in a simulated scenario
• Completing workplace incident report documentation
• Providing verbal and written handover information
• Understanding legal responsibilities during emergency response
• Reviewing incidents and identifying opportunities for improvement
• Recognising psychological impacts and accessing support when required

To participate in this course, students must be physically able to complete the practical activities required.

This includes:

• Performing 2 minutes of uninterrupted CPR on the floor without stopping
• Participating in simulated emergency response activities

To complete the online/pre-course study component, students will need access to:

• Computer, tablet or smartphone
• Internet connection

When you successfully complete this course, you will receive a Statement of Attainment including the following nationally recognised units:

In line with the First Aid in the Workplace Code of Practice and Australian Resuscitation Council (ARC) guidelines:

• First aid certificates should be renewed every 3 years.
• CPR and advanced resuscitation skills (HLTAID009/HLTAID015) should be refreshed every 12 months to remain current and confident.
